Food, fish & seafood

For more than 20 years, the fish consumption advisory has helped Minnesotans choose which species of fish to eat and how often in order to minimize their risks from contaminants in fish while gaining the many health benefits from eating fish.
But the American Heart Association is including something new in its guidelines this year. The organization is recommending people eat fish twice a week - especially fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which appear to protect against heart attacks. There are a lot of very good reasons to eat fish and seafood. Fish is a source of high quality protein, and is low in fat and cholesterol.
Fish and seafood are an excellent source of Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Magnesium and Omega 3 fatty acids. There is now a lot of evidence that people who regularly include fish in their diet have a lower risk of unwanted weight gain.
The Omega 3 fatty acids that Fish is rich off are a very important factor in the health benefits of a fish and seafood rich diet. Together with high quality vegetable oils health gains are impressive. So you better hit the tuna steak and reduce your intake of beef steak? Well not really as always its a matter of balance.
However, this advice is now being challenged by a group of experts in maternal nutrition who said yesterday that pregnant women should consume a minimum of 12 ounces of seafood a week but within this to limit albacore tuna to 6 ounces a week.
