Chocolate has a long history as a favored food of many cultures, including Aztec and Mayan. Today, chocolate is considered a luxury food that should be eaten sparingly as it can contribute to migraines, acne and obesity. New research, however, is disputing these common beliefs and suggests that eating chocolate in moderation may have its benefits. The investigation are now indicating that there are components in the cocoa beans used to make chocolate that are good for us and may help prevent heart disease, cancer and other degenerative illnesses. It is worth considering these investigations, as the findings are very interesting, but more evidence is needed. (more…)

Today, leeks are popular throughout Europe, especially in France as the key ingredient in vichyssoise, a cold potato, leek soup. Offering a milder and sweeter flavor than onions, which they are related to, leeks are wonderfully delicious when cooked until barely tender.
A member of the Amaryllidaceae family, leeks are closely related to scallions, onions and garlic. In fact, leeks look much like an overgrown scallion, with wide, flattened leaves and a thick white stalk. These Allium ampeloprasum are generally blue-green in color, although some varieties have purple leaves. Mild and sweet, leeks add a depth and complexity to the foods it’s cooked with, although not nearly as pungent as its relatives. (more…)

The total antioxidant capacity of blueberries (24 mcgmol Trolox equivalents per gram) is twice that of spinach and three times that of oranges. This extraordinary fruit is also rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown in several research studies to be effective in lowering cholesterol.
Blueberries are available year-round in many forms including fresh, frozen, juice, puree, concentrate, and dried. Fresh blueberries are higher in vitamins A and C than frozen or canned.

Known in the nutrition world as a “power” food, spinach is packed to the brim with essential nutrients. Unfortunately, it’s also known in the “real” world as a slimy, smelly vegetable that kids refuse to eat, even when you threaten to ground them for not being open-minded about it. Is it worth the effort to try to get your kids, or yourself for that matter, to eat spinach? Absolutely. Eating spinach will help you meet your daily need for a number of nutrients, including calcium, iron, folate and vitamin A. Find out why spinach should become the star of your meals.

Healthy Benefits:Spinach is rich in a number of essential nutrients, including calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin A. Each of these nutrients plays a crucial role in our bodies health, from maintaining bone structure, preventing neural tube defects, assisting in red blood cell production, regulating our heartbeat, fighting free radicals and nourishing good eyesight.

Eating spinach feeds a healthy body. Spinach is also a great source of lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoid phytonutrients that are important for healthy eyes. Eating about one cup of raw spinach offers roughly one-third of the nutrition as half a cup of cooked spinach (which is actually equal to about three cups raw).
So, while spinach makes a great addition to cold salads and sandwiches, enjoying your spinach hot packs a better nutritional punch. (more…)

He savored it before every romantic escapade, even drinking a mug of rich cocoa right before lovemaking. While the ultimate ladies’ man knew of chocolate’s aphrodisiacal powers, he probably didn’t know that eating it helped his health, too. So, go ahead, indulge in this decadent dessert…and give your libido a lift in time for Valentine’s Day.Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa than milk chocolate. Cocoa consumption lowers your risk of heart disease. As you grow older, your arteries become less and less flexible, making it hard for blood to flow through them. This raises your blood pressure. The flavonoids in chocolate boost levels of nitric oxide, which keeps your arteries flexible – and allows blood to flow to your vital organs more easily.Casanova used chocolate to enhance his skills in the sack, and his lovers never complained. But why exactly did it turn him on? (more…)

However this isn’t true of everyone, and recent research indicates that in some women, a lack of energy may be down to not enough Magnesium and B Vitamins in the diet, both nutrients that are vital for regenerating the cells ‘batteries’, called the mitochondria.

Research of the effects of a low and high Magnesium diet on energy levels in postmenopausal women found that when Magnesium intake was low, the women tired more easily, and that exercise increased heart rate and the body’s need for oxygen to a greater extent than women on a high Mg diet. They also needed more energy to make muscles function properly.

Magnesium is naturally present in green leafy vegetables, avocados, nuts and seeds and whole grains, but usually only in small amounts. Unfortunately, the body isn’t terribly good at absorbing Magnesium so plenty of these foods need to be eaten regularly. (more…)

There are 21 different amino acids recognized in science to have some kind of useful function, ranging from providing energy for the body to protecting against cardiovascular disease. Not one cell in the body could survive without the amino acids that proteins provide. In fact, next to water, protein is the second most abundant substance in our bodies. Read on to discover how they help your body function properly and promote health.
When we eat protein rich foods, such as meat, dairy and legumes, our bodies break down the proteins into smaller components, allowing nutrients to be absorbed across the intestinal wall. Specific proteins contain specific amino acids arranged in a specific order.
The 21 different amino acids are broken down into two very important groups - essential and nonessential. (more…)

Some consumer surveys indicate that soy may even be gaining in popularity as the protein supplement of choice for those lifting weights. Researchers recently reported that people who added 40 grams of soy protein to their daily diet may see an increase in levels of “good” cholesterol in their blood even if there blood cholesterol is normal. And that’s good news to anyone trying to get their family to eat more soy-based foods. These results were presented at the American Heart Association’s 41st Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention. The good news is that the Food and Drug Administration allows a health claim that 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease. When you start checking the labels if some foods you will learn you may need up to four servings of soy-based food to meet that goal.Researchers believe that isoflavones work in along with soy protein to reduce build bone, (more…)

But first, a bit of nutrition history. To begin with, the word protein is derived from the ancient Greek word “proteios,” which means “first” or “of primary importance.” However, protein doesn’t just strengthen muscles. It also helps to build and repair all of the tissues in the body. In addition, proteins are also used to make enzymes, which are absolutely crucial for everything from digestion to energy production…
Whey is a milk-based protein, although it only accounts for 20% of the total protein found in milk. One of the nutritional advantages to whey protein is that it’s low in fat and has certain key amino acids, (more…)

First they were cited as an unhealthy diet choice for those prone to heart disease, and now they are endorsed as a nutritious low-carb and high-protein food. The most common breakfast staple in many American homes, eggs have long been a universal symbol of birth and fertility. Nutritionally, the egg is a high-quality high-protein food because it contains all the essential amino acids in the right balance. In addition, eggs are also especially high in choline and an excellent source of selenium and riboflavin. All this for just 75 calories, 6 grams of protein and 5 grams fat for each large egg. Most of an egg’s nutrients can be found in the yolk. Another egg nutrition fact is that eggs contain the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect the eyes.Although eggs contain 213 milligrams of cholesterol, which makes them a high cholesterol food, the American Heart Association currently does not limit the number of egg yolks that can be consumed by healthy people. (more…)

Zinc is a mineral that is vital to healthy living. Even a small zinc deficiency can cause health problems, including decreased immunity to diseases such as the common cold.

Zinc is probably most widely known for its ability to prevent colds and shorten the duration of colds. This is because of zinc’s powerful ability to strengthen the immune system and improve white blood cell count. Zinc has even been able to help AIDS patients increase their immunity. Zinc is necessary for the function of many enzymes in the body. Zinc aids in regulating hormones, and it has shown to help maintain prostate health and even increase fertility. Zinc can help prevent and heal cold sores. Zinc aids in the body’s absorption of minerals, which means it can help prevent osteoporosis by helping the body absorb calcium. Zinc can improve the health of your skin and hair. The anti-inflammatory benefits of zinc can also help reduce the appearance of acne. Zinc has also been shown to help heal ulcers, and it can help you maintain a healthy digestive tract. (more…)

The white flowers, which are borne in umbels, have five sepals, five petals, many stamens, and a single pistil. The fruit is a pome, juicier than the apple, and varying from apple-shaped to teardrop-shaped. Among different varieties, the thin skin varies in color from light yellow and green through red and brown. The thick flesh varies in flavor among different varieties. In young, unripe common pears, and in young and mature Chinese sand pears, the flesh contains numerous gritty cells called stone cells. (more…)

Studies have shown that cherries are rich in antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, quercetin and ellagic acid. In addition, a cholesterol-lowering compound called beta-sitosterol is also found in cherries. Melatonin, which is also found cherries, especially tart cherries, was found to affect sleep patterns and has been promoted as an anti-aging supplement.
Cherries have been shown to have several health benefits. Cherries contain anthocyanins, which is the red pigment in berries. Cherry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants.
Cherries have also been shown to contain high levels of melatonin. Research has shown that people who have heart attacks have low melatonin levels. (more…)

More than 20 kinds are distinguished. Some favorites are Moorpark, of English origin, with a large, round, orange-red freestone, ripening in the middle of the season; Newcastle, of California origin, with a medium-size, round, orange-yellow freestone; and Royal, of French origin, with a large, oblate, yellow-red freestone, ready early in the season.
The fruit, somewhat smaller than a peach, is known for its delicate flavor. It is marketed fresh, as well as dried and packed. Large quantities are canned or pulped for jam making. California is the leading producers in the United States. It is also a significant crop in British Columbia (Canada), Australia, Italy, the south of France, and Israel.
Fresh, dried or canned, apricots are one of the best sources of beta-carotene, with just one fresh apricot providing about the daily recommendation of vitamin A. Canned apricots provide three times more because heat processing breaks down cell walls, releasing additional beta-carotene. (more…)

Tofu might be much loved in Asia, but the West largely loathes it. If a vegetarian can turn their nose up at tofu, what hope does the bean curd have of making it to the plate of a carnivore? However, there are good reasons for its Asian popularity, both for health and for the taste buds.

Nutritional properties
Tofu has become synonymous with vegetarian diets because it forms a nutritious alternative to meat, but it isn’t just veggies who could gain a thing or two from adding tofu to their meals. It is ideal for anyone who seeks a nutritious, healthy ingredient to add to dishes.
Soya beans and their tofu derivative have been credited with many health-giving properties, including protection against diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis. It is also believed to have cardiovascular benefits and can ease menopausal symptoms due to hormone-balancing phytoestrogens.
Tofu is high in protein, calcium, essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. It also benefits from being low in fat and sodium, making it ideal for counting calories and salt intake. It is also a good choice for those who have trouble digesting meat or experience heartburn.

Bland and boring?
If you have ever been silly enough to cook tofu without anything else, you will have discovered that it is basically and wholeheartedly bland. But that is the point. The spongy-custard texture sucks up flavours like a sponge. In Asian cuisine, tofu bathes in many rich flavours and competently carries those flavours to the palate in its soft, easy to eat texture. (more…)

Serotonin helps you stop eating after consuming the recommended amount of food every day. Low serotonin levels stimulate appetite control centers in the brain, resulting in strong cravings for carbohydrates in particular.
In research studies, 5-hydroxytryptophan (also known as 5-HTP) is the immediate precursor to serotonin (5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine). Serotonin plays an important role in regulation of mood, appetite, body temperature, and the secretion of various hormones. This type of natural supplementation has been shown to promote weight loss by increasing satiety, leading to fewer calories being consumed at meals.
Naturopathic doctors are stating that there is much evidence to suggest that low serotonin levels are a common cause of modern lifestyles, being related to depression, overweight, insomnia, headaches, and other disorders. Factors that interfere with serotonin metabolism are stress, insufficient vitamin B6 or magnesium, a high protein diet, and dieting. (more…)
