Fish is an excellent source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which may improve cholesterol levels as well as help you lose weight. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week. Including fish in your diet can promote better health and weight loss because fish is low in fat and calories. Sea food contains an abundance of essential minerals - iron, zinc, iodine and selenium. (more…)

But the American Heart Association is including something new in its guidelines this year. The organization is recommending people eat fish twice a week - especially fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which appear to protect against heart attacks. There are a lot of very good reasons to eat fish and seafood. Fish is a source of high quality protein, and is low in fat and cholesterol. (more…)

Failing to take in the required amount of iron affects everything from your red blood cells to your brain to your attention span; it may even put you at risk for anemia, a serious condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells. The good news is that most people can get enough of this mineral simply by eating the right combination of iron-rich foods and other nutrients which support the absorption of iron. (more…)

High cholesterol! This term seems to be highly used when dealing with today’s health topics! It is the yellowish material in your arteries which narrows the blood vessels. But they are not all bad for you. You can lower the bad type of cholesterol (LDL - low density lipoprotein) and increase the good type of cholesterol (HDL - high density lipoprotein) by altering your diet. LDL is responsible for clogging your blood vessels and HDL helps to “exile” the LDL to the liver where LDL is “destroyed”. Hence it is beneficial to have higher level of HDL and less LDL in your blood.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon is an excellent source to boost up HDL in your blood stream. Omega-3 fatty acid is, indeed, a type of polyunsaturated fatty acids which can only be supplied by food sources. (more…)

Avoid seafood to lower blood cholesterol
This is definitely the number one myth about seafood. Seafood in general contains a high level of cholesterol; however it is low in saturated fats. Cholesterol found in seafood and other meats has little effect on blood cholesterol in most people. Saturated fats and trans fatty acids are the most important factors that raise blood cholesterol, not dietary cholesterol! Saturated fats are usually found in meat products and packaged foods. Trans fats, on the other hand, are also found in packaged snack foods, deep-fried foods or firm margarine containing hydrogenated oil.

Limit fish intake because it contains mercury
Everywhere I go, people often ask me which fish to eat and which fish to avoid. Obviously, they have read the FDA’s seafood advisory. However please note that this advisory was directed to warn pregnant and nursing women as well as young children only who are most prone to mercury toxicity; it was not supposed to be for the general public. There is really no need to be fear of fish. (more…)

But more and more people are choosing not to eat red meat, becoming vegetarian or eating too much of the same foods. Essential iron Iron is an important mineral and responsible for aiding many of your body’s functions. One of the most vital of these is its essential role in forming haemoglobin, the red pigment in your blood that allows it to carry oxygen around the body. All the tissues and cells in the body depend on oxygen to function properly, an iron deficiency means they receive less oxygen and cannot function efficiently. It can also lead to anaemia. Iron helps to fortify your immune system by feeding your infection fighting cells. A healthy supply of iron also starts a chemical reaction that helps your body release energy from food. (more…)

Some you can eat freely, such as white fish, but others, such as mackerel, tuna and swordfish, need to be controlled. Midwives and doctors generally don’t recommend dietary supplements during pregnancy, but experts from a number of medical fields are backing new advice following study results by Harvard University, published in New Scientist, that pregnant women should take pure fish oil supplements.Omega 3 essential fatty acids, found in oily fish, are vital for the successful growth and development of a foetus, but doubts have recently been cast upon the safety of some types of fresh fish for expectant mothers. (more…)
