In addition, family meals offer the chance to introduce your child to new foods and to act as a role model for healthy eating. (more…)

The Arabs were the exclusive importers of the spice to Europe up until 1512, when Vasco de Gama reached the Moloccas and claimed the islands for Portugal. To preserve their new monopoly, the Portuguese (and from 1602, the Dutch) restricted the trees to the islands of Banda and Amboina. The Dutch were especially cautious, since the part of the fruit used as a spice is also the seed, so that anyone with the spice could propagate it. To protect against this, the Dutch bathed the seeds in lime, which would prevent them from growing. This plan was thwarted however, by fruit pigeons who carried the fruit to other islands, before it was harvested, scattering the seeds. The Dutch sent out search and destroy crews to control the spread and when there was an abundant harvest, they even burned nutmeg to keep its supply under control. (more…)

A diet based more on plant-based foods than meats and dairy can lead to extra years of healthy living. This very same diet reduces environmental damage and farm animal suffering. Eating Green brings to bear the science on a greener diet and its impact on the environment. The choices we make about what we eat each day really can have some major environmental consequences. It’s easy to forget about the energy, water, chemicals and effort used to produce everyday food items like chocolate bars, soft drink or a packet of chips. Not to mention the fuel burnt getting these items to you. In an age when you can walk into a cafeteria and ask for the “low-carbon meal” special, eating green is no longer just the dream of hemp. It is a reality. (more…)

Okra pods grow from two inches in length up to eight inches, with the smaller size offering the tenderest, most pleasing flavor. The larger pods tend to become woody and tough. Some have described the flavor of okra as something between an eggplant and asparagus. Neither seems fitting. Okra’s flavor stands above any comparison. When cooked, the texture is soft and the flavor delicate, with the seeds adding delightful character.
If you plan to grow okra in your garden, plant several seeds or seedlings in the early spring for a good summer harvest. Throughout the summer, check the plants daily, harvesting the pods while they are small, two to four inches in length. Okra is available throughout the year in many markets, especially markets that sell Middle Eastern items, but its peak season is summer. (more…)

Eating some fat is necessary. It is an important source of concentrated energy - it has more than twice as many calories per ounce as sugar, starch or protein. Fats help carry fat- soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. In addition, a specific type of fat found in plants is essential for proper functioning of our bodies. Fats can also make food taste better, aid in cooking, and help keep the hunger pangs away. The total amount of fat you eat, whether high or low, isn’t really linked with disease. What really matters is the type of fat you eat. (more…)

Some 324,000 kids age five and under exceed federal safety standards every day for just one neurotoxic insecticide, methyl parathion. Methyl parathion is the most toxic organophosphate insecticide approved for use on food. It’s so toxic that the EPA’s “daily” safe dose for the compound is 0.000025 milligrams per kilogram of human body weight. A 154-pound person would exceed the EPA daily dose by eating less than two one-millionths of a gram of the chemical (002 milligrams). Some apples and peaches are so contaminated with methyl parathion that a kid can exceed the government’s safe daily limits with just two bites. A 154-pound adult eating such an apple would ingest only half of the current safe daily dose, whereas it would put a 44-pound child 67 percent over his or her “safe’ limit”. (more…)

Fish is an excellent source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which may improve cholesterol levels as well as help you lose weight. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week. Including fish in your diet can promote better health and weight loss because fish is low in fat and calories. Sea food contains an abundance of essential minerals - iron, zinc, iodine and selenium. (more…)

But the American Heart Association is including something new in its guidelines this year. The organization is recommending people eat fish twice a week - especially fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which appear to protect against heart attacks. There are a lot of very good reasons to eat fish and seafood. Fish is a source of high quality protein, and is low in fat and cholesterol. (more…)

Chipotles date back to region that is now northern Mexico City, prior to the Aztec civilization. It is conjectured that the Aztecs smoked the chilies because the thick, fleshy, jalapeno was difficult to dry and prone to rot. The Aztecs used the same “smoke drying” process for the chilies as they used for drying meats. This smoking allowed the chilies to be stored for a substantial period of time. Today Chipotles are used widely throughout Mexico as well as in the United States. Quite popular in the South Western U.S. and California; Chipotles have found their way into the cuisine of many celebrity chefs from Hawaii to Manhattan. (more…)

Detoxing is a natural process your body goes through that gets rid of debris known as toxins. Under normal conditions our bodies are designed to eliminate these toxins through the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, skin etc. Did you know that just because you feel healthy and fit; it does not necessarily mean there’s nothing to worry about? That while
you believe you’re as fit as ever, there are thousands of toxic substances lodged in every cell of your body which have accumulated over the years? But don’t panic, because it’s not too late to fight the toxins which cause fatigue, illness, stress and mood swings and recover your healthier self. Body detox diets give you the power to do this. (more…)

What benefit does this apple diet have? Eating fresh apples is good for you. The people saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” did have some truth in it. A diet that contains a steady supply of fresh fruit that includes fiber and vitamin C can’t help but be good for you. A medium size apple contains approximately 5 grams of fiber, or 20% of the recommended daily intake of fiber. In fact, an apple contains both kinds of fiber said to be most beneficial: soluble and insoluble. The pectin, or soluble part of an apple, also has the added benefit of preventing cholesterol buildup in the arteries. The insoluble fiber is what creates bulk in the colon, and helps to move food through the digestive tract quickly and easily. (more…)

So you really should wear lipstick, and you should apply it generously to bring your lips fully to life. Only a few tips on using it, though: lighter colors for the daytime, richer or darker colors for the night time. You’ll know exactly what you need for maximum effect, and the rules of application are totally simple: don’t let it ride above the natural lip contour.
